Pathway information
Following a diagnosis, many young people and their families may seek ways to understand and adapt to their new reality. Art therapy plays a crucial role in post-diagnostic support, offering a reflective, creative process to help individuals make sense of their diagnosis in a non-invasive and empowering way. At Young Wellbeing Hub, we ensure that each session is tailored to the individual’s needs, providing a safe and nurturing space for neurodiverse young people to explore their emotions, develop coping strategies, and navigate their personal journeys with greater understanding.
Art therapy is a form of psychological intervention that uses art-making to support therapeutic processes. Art psychotherapist is a protected title, registered with the Health and Care Professions Council (HCPC). Art therapy aims to help clients understand themselves and others, encouraging creativity in a playful and natural way.
Art therapy is tailored to each client and scheduled to meet their individual needs. We offer remote sessions that can be accessed from the comfort of your own home.
Like other forms of therapy, art therapy can support clients in understanding and managing emotional difficulties and distress. The inclusion of art-making offers an additional dimension—allowing clients to slow down and engage in ‘play’ within a safe, supportive therapeutic relationship.
Our art therapy service is open to neurodivergent individuals of all ages seeking a creative outlet for emotional well-being.
No. Art therapy encourages clients to explore their creative side—whatever that may look like for them. It is not an art class, and you will not be marked or judged on your artistic ability. You can’t do art therapy ‘wrong’!
We encourage clients to keep any artwork made in therapy somewhere private and safe. This is because it may hold difficult feelings or experiences, and it could be upsetting if someone who does not understand its meaning were to comment on it.
When accessing art therapy at the Young Wellbeing Hub, you will be provided with a folder to store your artwork at home. Sometimes, it can be helpful to review your artwork towards the end of the therapy process, as a way of reflecting on your journey and what you have created.
No, art therapy is not about analysing artwork. It does not involve the therapist imposing their own ‘meaning’ onto the image. Instead, it is about the client creating their own meaning through the process.
It is important that clients feel safe to explore their internal worlds without fear of judgement or assumptions.
Art therapy provides a safe and supportive space to explore and understand the client’s experiences together.
Our sessions are tailored to meet the needs of each individual in a supportive, neuro-affirmative environment. Sessions are available in blocks of 6 sessions and each session lasts 50 minutes.
Our art therapy sessions are 1:1 and is delivered remotely over Microsoft Teams. Please note that you will need a device with a strong Wi-Fi connection, and a working camera and microphone to participate in remote sessions.
Art therapy materials will be provided by Young Wellbeing Hub and are included as part of the cost.
There are no specific pre-requisites for art therapy, however all clients must fulfil our inclusion criteria. Therefore, please ensure you have reviewed our inclusion and exclusion criteria and are happy to proceed to the next stage.
