Neuroaffirmative Needs-Based Assessment

At Young Wellbeing Hub, we recognise that neurodiversity is experienced differently by each individual.

Our neuroaffirmative needs-based assessment is designed to provide a comprehensive review of the traits, characteristics, and needs of individuals who may be autistic, have ADHD, or experience co-occurring mental health difficulties.

What are ADHD and autism and how are they linked?

Both autism and ADHD are neurodevelopmental differences, and whilst some of the characteristics can overlap, each have their own presentation. A combined presentation is commonly being referred to as ‘AuDHD’.

It is important to understand that individuals experience autism and ADHD differently. Some may attempt to “mask” their difficulties around certain people or settings. If you notice that you, or your loved one has been struggling with social communication, language development, repetitive and restricted behaviours, or hyperactivity, impulsivity and inattention, and you would like to understand more about your/their specific needs, a neuroaffirmative needs-based assessment may be appropriate.

It is important to note that this is not a diagnostic assessment. Instead, it offers a detailed exploration of an individual’s strengths, challenges, and areas where support is needed, helping to develop a personalised plan for moving forward. If you are unsure whether a diagnostic or neuroaffirmative needs-based assessment will be more suitable for you, consider whether you are seeking a formal diagnosis or a clearer understanding of support needs. For additional guidance surrounding autism diagnosis, see the National Autistic Society’s advice.

What the assessment covers

  • Neurodiverse traits and characteristics

We explore the presence of key traits and characteristics associated with neurodivergence, such as autism and ADHD. This includes reviewing areas like communication, sensory processing, executive functioning, and emotional regulation to understand how these traits manifest in the individual’s daily life.

  • Co-occurring mental health considerations

Neurodivergence often coexists with mental health challenges, such as anxiety, depression, or OCD. Our assessment considers the impact of these co-occurring conditions, helping us to understand the full picture of an individual’s emotional and mental well-being.

  • Strengths and resilience

Focusing on strengths is a cornerstone of our approach. We highlight the individual’s talents, skills, and areas of resilience, which can serve as powerful tools for navigating challenges. Recognising these strengths is essential for creating an empowering, strengths-based plan.

  • Recognising risk and its function

Exploring risk in the context of personal and interpersonal communication to provide an understanding of this behaviour and its function.

  • Challenges and barriers

We identify specific challenges or barriers the individual faces—whether they be sensory, social, emotional, or related to daily functioning. Understanding these challenges allows us to recommend targeted support and strategies to overcome them.

  • Support needs and next steps

Based on the presence of neurodivergent traits and co-occurring mental health factors, we work with the individual (and their support network, where appropriate) to identify key areas for support. This might involve therapeutic interventions, adjustments to the home or school environment, or practical strategies for daily living.
